# State of agent traffic: October 2026

> What visits a developer-tools site, counted first-hand: 2026-09-28 to 2026-10-09, 12 days, updated nightly. Every request to overwing.ai classified against the Atlas registry, identity claims checked against what operators publish, no addresses.

## Findings

1. Over 12 days, 2026-09-28 to 2026-10-09, overwing.ai answered 56,994 requests from 622 distinct User-Agent strings, about 543 distinct clients a day.
2. Registered agents made 11.6% of requests. Software that names itself but is in no registry made 54.3%, generic HTTP libraries 21.6%, and browsers 7.6%.
3. 52 registered agents were seen. The ten busiest made 85.3% of agent requests; the busiest was Agent402 (Agent402 (agent402.tools)) with 2,940 requests on 12 of 12 days.
4. By purpose, Search / retrieval index 67.4%, Training / bulk crawl 17.6%, Other / undocumented 14% of agent requests.
5. 4,066 agent requests claimed an identity that could be checked against the operator's published IP ranges, reverse DNS or signing keys: 246 (6.1%) were confirmed, 2 contradicted the claim, and the rest could not be confirmed either way.
6. Among discovery files, automated clients asked most for the MCP endpoint (14,812), x402 payment terms (14,352), .well-known discovery files (8,392), the OpenAPI document (2,461).
7. Of 19,218 requests with a recorded answer, 16% were refused with a client error other than a payment request.
8. In the last seven days 464 distinct User-Agent strings were seen; 233 (50.2%) had not appeared earlier in the period. The registry holds 312 published agents, with 10 self-named strings waiting for review.
9. On the readiness panel, 39 developer-tool sites were checked in the latest week: the median score was 67 of 100, 92.3% publish llms.txt, 33.3% have a hosted MCP endpoint that answers, and 0 score 90 or more.

## How ready developer tools are

Median score 67 of 100 across 39 of 39 panel sites checked this week; 92.3% publish llms.txt; 33.3% have a hosted MCP endpoint that answers; 0 score 90 or more. Week by week: https://overwing.ai/atlas/readiness

## Method

Every request to overwing.ai is classified against the Atlas registry and rolled up nightly by day and User-Agent, with addresses hashed and no request bodies kept. Identity is checked against IP ranges, reverse DNS and signing keys the operator publishes. Registered agents are counted by registry agent; everything else by User-Agent string. One site, so the shares describe a developer-tools site that invites agents, not the web. The readiness panel is the same Beacon check run weekly on a fixed list of developer-tool sites.
